Finding the Best Pizza Coupons & Deals

We have scoured the internet and looked at all the sources out there for coupons to save you money on your next pizza order. We looked at numerous factors when picking our favorite site for getting coupon codes and deals. We looked at pizza places offered, amount of deals offered, quality of the coupons as well as accuracy.

Here are out top three coupon sites for you to check out.

1) Coupon Dad

Coupon Dad offers many Restaurant coupons, but especially has a great selection of pizza coupons. They cover Dominos, Pizza Hut, Papa John’s and Papa Murphy’s. The reason they top our list is the quality and accuracy of the coupons. They do a good job of having the latest coupons and deals posted and take the coupons down as soon as they expire. They are the first place I go when looking for a coupon code!

2) RetailMeNot

RetailMeNot is one of the largest coupon sites in the world and has many fans. They do cover a plethora of pizza places and you are sure to find a coupon that will work for you. Our main issue with this site is coupon accuracy. So many of the coupons don’t work. One of the reasons is they allow user generated content which isn’t vetted for accuracy first.

3) Dominos Rewards

If you are a fan of Dominos than you definitely should join the Dominos Rewards program called “Piece of the Pie”. For every order you place of $10 or more (one order per day eligible) you earn 10 points. You can then redeem your points to earn free pizza. For example 60 points gets you a free medium two topping pizza. Not bad!

4) Papa Johns Rewards

Papa Johns also has a rewards program. Their program earns you 1 point for every $5 dollars you spend online. Your points can be redeemed for pizza, sides or desserts. Another program you should definitely sign up for if you order often from Papa John’s/

5) Local Pizza Places

Many of your local pizza joints also will offer coupons and reward programs. Usually we just find these coupons and deals right on their websites. Some of our favorite NY Style pizza places offer coupons. Make sure to also check your local newspaper and Val-Pak coupon books you will get in the mail.

In Conclusion

When ever ordering pizza for carryout or delivery you should definitely check for coupons and deals. These offers can save you up to 50% or more on your order. Especially if you like to order pizzas with lots of toppings. They can be very expensive at full price but coupons often will get you a pizza at a set price that can save you a ton. Remember to check the sites we mention above. Only takes a minute to save some serious cash.

The History of Pizza

History of Pizza Image

The History of Pizza

Todays idea of pizza consists of baked circular bread with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese sprinkled on top but that was not case when describing the origins of pizza. The word “pizza” was first recorded in Gaeta, Italy, 997 A.D. but archeologist have discovered flat disk shaped breads petrified in the hands of Pompeii victims which is as late as 79 A.D.

For as long as there has been flat bread, there may as well have been pizza with more localized ingredients as toppings such as onion, herbs, oils, butter, and cheese. Milestones in the history of pizza include Persian soldiers baking flatbread on their shields and covering it with cheese and dates in the early 500 B.C. Ancient Greeks baked flat bread called plakountos with toppings and this is where the history of what we know as pizza today, begins. The Greeks founded the city of Naples, known as Neopolis in 6th century B.C. Later conquered by the Romans in the 4th century, ancient pizza ovens could be found all over Italy. The Northern Italian bread called focaccia is known as a precursor of pizza. For centuries “pizza” at the time was seen as a poor mans staple and not much changed until 1492 when Christopher Columbus lands in the new world.

Pizza Coming to the New World

Colonization of the new world lead to The Columbian Exchange where the Old World and New Old exchange plants, animals, diseases and technology. This exchange included the tomatoes arrival into the Mediterranean. First thought to be poisonous for about 200 years, the pewter plates they used at the time where high in lead content and caused poisoning, it wasn’t until the Civil War Era did the tomato become a official kitchen fruit. Yes, tomatoes are fruits. Naples, being mostly a poor city, ate tomatoes during the poison scare simple because that might have been a cheap product to get. Sliced tomatoes soon became popular topping on flatbread and the pizza was officially born. For the rest of the 16th and 17th pizza climbs as a favorite dish in Italy, in fact travelers who specifically went to Italy to taste the poor mans pizza where known as pizzaioli. The Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba in Naples, sold pizza’s to vendors and became known as the Italy’s first pizza restaurant which is still open today. The modern pizza was made in 1889 when Queen of Italy, Margherita di Savoia, was vacationing in Naples and heard about the amazing pizzas made by a pizzaiolo (pizza maker) named Raffaele Esposito, of Pizzeria Brandi, which is still open today. She ordered what the American Pie book quotes “a marinara pizza with anchovies; a bianca, or white pizza, with lard, provolone or creamy caciocavallo cheese, and basil; and a pizza with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil”. Raffaele Esposito took the pizza a step further and organized the red tomato, white mozzarella, and green basil in the shape of the Italian flag and named this creation: pizza Margherita. This was also known as the worlds first delivery pizza.

The Birth of the Frozen Pizza

As Italian immigrates move into the United States, so does their pizza. It only remained popular in the Italian sectors of the big cities until the end of WWII. Soldiers deployed from Italy returned home with a taste for pizza and the popularity grew nation wide. Pizza was no longer an ethnic food and considered a product in 1950s when the  Celentano Brothers became the first brand of frozen pizza to be marketed nationally. The next major jump in pizza would be made by DomiNicks Pizza in February 1961, later known as Domino’s, when they used the great American invention of the automobile to deliver pizza to customers home. Pizza delivery would define a culture of easy and convenient living to this very day.

Here is a a commercial from 1980 for the Celentano Brothers frozen pizza.

Top 5 National Pizza Restaurant Chains

Top 5 National Pizza Restaurant Chains

America loves it’s pizza, we love it so much that as a country we eat 251,770,000 pounds every year. Its that perfect combination of cheese, sauce, toppings and crust that make a pizza delicious. But who makes the best pizza? Here we will count down America’s top pizza chains.

Little Caesars Pizza Logo#5 Little Caesars

Founded in the Detroit suburbs in 1959, Little Caesars is known for its hand made pizza dough and its mascot with the catch phrase “Pizza Pizza!”. Most fans of Little Caesars give compliments to its $5 for a large pepperoni or plain cheese pizza known as HOT N’ READY. Little Caesars newest idea of a crispy bacon wrapped deep dish pizza is both a blessing for your taste buds but a curse for your waistline and yet I still keep coming back.

California Pizza Kitchen Logo#4 California Pizza Kitchen

Founded in 1985 at Beverly Hills, California Pizza Kitchen was made famous with its BBQ chicken pizza. With 200 stores in the US alone and selling frozen pizza on the shelves at your local grocery store, California Pizza Kitchen is becoming a fav amongst pizza fans. Now catering to gluten intolerance customer they sell their BBQ chicken and Margherita pizza frozen in stores and gluten free. They have more options in store with their gluten free pepperoni, mushroom and sausage pizza. Its also all about the taste. There is little difference in taste between the thin crust regular pizza and its gluten free counter part. But that is for you to decide.

Papa John's Pizza Logo#3 Papa Johns

Founded October 2 1984, Jeffersonville, Indiana, Papa Johns boasts number 3 in pizza delivery and carry out on our list but for the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) they can pride number 1 in customer satisfaction. There is some controversy over Papa John’s decision to change ingredients in their pizza, true they are removing artificial ingredients but customer worry about flavor and price changes in their famous pizza. These changes will be completed by the end of 2016 so its too soon to see the change is worth it.

Dominos Pizza Logo#2 Dominos

Founded in 1960 Ypsilanti, Michigan, Domino’s has grown from a two man operation to a global franchise. Dominos is second on this this because the taste of their pizza is almost the best pizza I can depend on every time I order. Another fall back they have to my personal opinion is that they don’t make stuff crust pizza. Other then this, the cheese, sauce, and crust are perfectly proportioned and make a good meal and a good price. Just always make sure to check for coupons before ordering.

Pizza-Hut-logo-265x160#1 Pizza Hut

Finally number one, Pizza Hut founded in June 1958 in Wichita, Kansas. Pizza Hut is the oldest franchise on this list and its obvious their years of experience is worth the pizza. A favorite of mine is their pepperoni stuff crust for $17.99 plus tax, without coupons, which is worth every penny. What I enjoy most about their pizza is their fluffy crust and mouthwatering cheese. Also Pizza Hut desserts such as their Hersey’s chocolate chip pie is nothing short of perfect.
